On 16 October 1977, the town of Beasain organised a mass gathering to take part in an event known as Kilometroak. Its creator and driving force, Josu Erguin, then a young father of 25, saw this event as a source of funding for the ikastolas (Basque-language schools). Three decades later it had become a well-established fixture and a popular festival bringing people together. That first year, the route was 6 kilometres long and numerous institutions paid significant sums of money for the kilometres covered. Around 15,000 people took part, including prominent figures from Basque culture such as José Miguel Barandiaran and Mikel Laboa, amongst others.
