The Basque Film Archive has uploaded part of its collection online to showcase the images held in its Archive. The films are organised by decade and by collection, and have been selected on the basis of historical, geographical and cultural criteria. Tasio

The film Tasio (Montxo Armendáriz, 1984) was restored by the Basque Film Archive at the L’immagine Ritrovata laboratories, part of the Bologna Film Library, between October and November 2023.
Nafarrako ikazkinak – Charcoal Burners of Navarre

The Conservation Department of the Basque Film Archive has restored Nafarrako ikazkinak – Charcoal Burners of Navarre (Montxo Armendáriz, 1981). Nafarrako ikazkinak – Charcoal Burners of Navarre is a documentary depicting the lives of the last charcoal burners in the mountains of Navarre, a testament to the traditions and human landscape of the Lokiz mountain range, which enabled the director from Navarre to meet Anastasio Ochoa, who would later inspire the lead character in Tasio (1984).
Four medium-length films from the 1980s

In 2025, the Basque Film Archive and EITB restored the medium-length films Hamaseigarrenean aidanez (Anjel Lertxundi, 1985), Ehun metro (Alfonso Ungría, 1985), Zergatik panpox (Xabier Elorriaga, 1985) and Oraingoz izen gabe (José Julián Bakedano, 1986). The restoration work was carried out at the L’Immagine Ritrovata laboratories in Bologna and the films were screened in September in the Klasikoak section of the San Sebastián Film Festival. In 1985, the first three films were the first project entirely funded by the Basque Government to promote cinema in the Basque language.

Initially, we have chosen to upload films dating from the 1910s to the 1980s. However, the time frame will be expanded as more films are published in this section.

Collections

The Basque Film Archive considers films that are grouped together to be of special interest, whether because they were directed by the same person or because they share the same theme. We therefore regard these films as forming part of a single unit that constitutes a collection, and we have deemed it appropriate to highlight them in this section.
