The film contains documentary footage of the Basque Country, the ruins of Gernika following the bombing, and the departure of Basque children and their exile to France, Great Britain and Belgium. This documentary therefore offers us the Basque nationalist perspective on the war, aimed primarily at foreign audiences. Guernika begins with the image of a peaceful, hard-working and Catholic Basque people whose lives are shattered by the outbreak of war, concluding with a call for solidarity from the international democratic community.
