Gotzon Elortza reflects on the concept of homeland in this film. It focuses on aspects of rural life in the Basque Country and features representatives of Basque culture of the time, such as the bertsolaris (poets improvising songs) Valentín Enbeita and Jon Lopategi, and the dancer Víctor Olaeta. To avoid censorship, Elortza called the film Erria.
Gotzon Elortza is a leading figure in Basque cinema of the transition period to democracy. The Bilbao-born draughtsman and amateur filmmaker, based in Paris, is the author of four films in Basque shot on 16 mm. Shot in a traditional style during holidays with his wife, Elortza’s films champion the Basque language and showcase iconic locations in Bizkaia from the late 1950s and early 1960s.
