Images from the celebrations marking the 25th anniversary of the Urola Railway. The Urola Railway was a narrow-gauge line linking the towns of Zumárraga and Zumaia in the Urola Valley. On 22 February 1951, officials travelled the route whilst crowds gathered on the platforms at each station. It was Spain’s first electric train and the last line to be built in the Basque Country. The railway was inaugurated on 22 February 1926 by Alfonso XIII and ceased operations in the autumn of 1986, closing permanently on 2 February 1988.
This film shows the section of the route the train travels from Zumaia to Azpeitia. As it passes the Sanctuary of Loyola, Bishop Jaume Font y Andreu celebrates mass and later visits the power stations alongside the dignitaries and railway workers.
